This is just a sampling of what we've done in our past events. If you like what you see and would like to be updated on what's coming up next, be sure to check out our Instagram and Facebook groups!
Snow Trip: Yes there is snow in California! In the winter we drive out to the mountains of California to see the snow. Not just see but have snowball fights, go sledding, and take cool pictures throwing snow up in the air.
Christmas Party: Every year we host a Christmas party where we eat a yummy traditional Christmas meal, and discuss the true meaning of Christmas as the day when God came to be with us. Afterwards we play an exciting game of exchanging gifts.
Clues for God: Do you ever wonder why life even exists? Where do we come from? What is life all about? Is there a God? "Clues for God" is one of the special talks we host where we put up different presentations and share about different clues we found for the existence of God. We also had talks addressing the problem of pain and suffering and we explored the differences between different religions.
Night Market: We look forward to this event each semester. It is an opportunity to collaborate with other cultural student groups as well as work together to cook and sell some dishes to fundraise for IUSM! We also get to spend time together enjoying the delicious street food and watching the special performances!
Thanksgiving Party: During Thanksgiving in the US, families and friends get together to give thanks for what they have and share a meal, which traditionally includes a roast turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie and more. This past year one of our members also made special pumpkin pancakes on the spot! We also celebrated with singing, a special skit, and games.
Gospel Seminar: What is the gospel? The central message of the Christian faith presented in Mandarin, featuring personal stories of Chinese students.
Easter Celebration: Easter is not about bunnies or Easter eggs, but is a Christian holiday celebrating the historical event of Jesus Christ's resurrection. Christians believe that Jesus took the punishment of human's sin, died on the cross and rose from the dead 3 days after, so that whoever believes in him can receive forgiveness of sins and have eternal life! It is a joyous and happy day to celebrate! In IUSM we celebrate with an Easter choir, special church service, and barbeque.
Love the needy (VDoc): Instead of thinking about whether or not we have a valentine on this day, we took the initiative to reach out to those in our community who are even more alone to care and love for them. Some things that we have done are going to local nursing homes to visit the elderly, bringing them small gifts and singing songs to them to remind them that they are not forgotten and are precious. And in this way, we think that loving others leaves a lasting impact in our hearts more than receiving a box of chocolates or flowers that at most last for a week.
Loving the Needy: Instead of thinking about whether or not we have a valentine on this day, we took the initiative to reach out to those in our community who are even more alone to care and love for them.
Fun in IUSM: We love to spend time together and get to know one another. We often explore new places and go on fun trips over the weekends including snow trips, Six Flags, Dim Sum, Land’s End, and more! Whether we go out or stay in, we are always looking for new ways to have fun and connect!
Christmas Party: For us, Christmas is more than decorted trees and gifts (although still included), but it is about remembering the true reason for the season and celebrating with the people in our life. Every year we host a christmas party where we eat a yummy traditional christmas meal, discuss the true meaning of Christmas as the day when God came to be with us. Gifts are still a part of the night as we also have our gamemasters lead us in christmas gift exchange games.
Different Special talks: Are big questions about life at the back of your mind but you don't know how to even start thinking about them? We start your research for you by hosting special talks given by students and alumni on these big questions. This past year we had talks on Clues for God, Pain and Suffering and Comparative Religions.
Night Market: We look forward to this event each semester. It is an opportunity to collaborate with other cultural student groups as well as work together to cook and sell some dishes to fundraise for IUSM! We also get to spend time together enjoying the delicious street food and watching the special performances!
Thanksgiving Party: Tis the season for pumkin flavored desserts, snacks, and starbucks drinks but more importantly for giving thanks for people in our life over yummy food. This past year we shared a traditional thanksgiving meal and not-so-traditional, special pumpkin pancakes made on the spot. We also celebrated with singing, a special skit, and games (so thankful for the hilarious games people come up with).
Gospel Seminar: What is the gospel? The central message of the Christian faith presented in Mandarin, featuring personal stories of Chinese students.
Easter Celebration: He is Risen! An event that split time between B.C. and A.D. and happened two thousand years ago is something we still make a big deal about on Easter. No bunnies, no eggs but celebration with lots of singing, and discovering why Jesus' life made such an impact through creative elements. We also end the weekend with BBQ!
Loving the Needy: Instead of thinking about whether or not we have a valentine on this day, we took the initiative to reach out to those in our community who are even more alone to care and love for them. Some things that we have done are going to local nursing homes to visit the elderly, bringing them small gifts and singing songs to them to remind them that they are not forgotten and are precious.
